Auto Insurance

Everyone knows that life can be unpredictable. Accidents happen all the time and usually when you least expect it. You could be driving to work when all of a sudden you see one car plow into another in the next lane over. Unfortunately, the traffic fatality rate is rising. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of traffic fatalities in Maryland has increased from 442 to 513 between 2014 and 2015. Not only is it illegal to be uninsured, but auto insurance will protect you and your loved ones in the event of an accident.

As of July 1, 2017, drivers who are asked to provide proof of insurance during a routine traffic stop but are unable to provide an insurance card are subject to a fine. This is meant to be a warning, as fines continue to increase the longer you stay uninsured. If you are in the Maryland area, you can contact T. L. Brown Insurance Group, LLC for more information.

Auto Insurance Requirements

The state of Maryland requires drivers to have a certain amount of coverage through an auto insurance company. The minimum requirements are:

  • Bodily Injury Liability - This type of insurance covers you in the event that you are found responsible for someone else's bodily injuries.
  • Property Damage Liability - This type of insurance covers any damage to someone else's property, such as another car or building, for which you are responsible.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist - This type of coverage pays for any medical expenses if you are in an accident, but the other driver is at fault and uninsured.
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP) - This type of coverage pays the medical bills for you and passengers hurt in an accident. It can also cover any related expenses. For example, if you are unable to work as a result of your injuries, PIP would cover lost wages up to the limit.

Optional types of auto insurance include medical payments coverage, comprehensive coverage, and collision coverage.

Motorcycle Insurance

Motorcycle insurance is required for all motorcycle drivers throughout Maryland. Considering this and the fact that motorcycle accidents are 27 times more likely to be fatal than accidents by other passenger vehicles, it is imperative that you not only get motorcycle insurance but get as much as you can. There's no such thing as too much motorcycle insurance.

We at T. L. Brown Insurance Group, LLC would like to remind all motorcyclists to wear their helmets. Not only is it a smart way to stay safe, it's a legal requirement in Maryland.

There are many different coverage policies available. An agent from T. L. Brown Insurance Group, LLC is sure to help you find what's right for you.

Types of coverage plans include:

  • Collision
  • Comprehensive
  • Liability
  • Medical Payments
  • No-Fault
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist

Collision coverage covers damage done to your motorcycle by another vehicle or object. Comprehensive coverage covers theft of your motorcycle and damage caused by disaster or mayhem. Liability coverage covers the damage caused by a motorcyclist. In Maryland, the minimum body liability coverage is 20/40. Should you wish to cover an extra passenger on your motorcycle, liability insurance will not be sufficient. You will need both comprehensive and collision plans in that case.

Medical payment coverage is required in Maryland and will cover funeral and medical expenses for you or anyone involved with an accident while riding or driving your motorcycle. No fault coverage pays up to 80% of medical expenses regardless of who was at fault. (Not required but recommended.)

Uninsured motorist coverage is required in Maryland and covers you for bodily injury caused by a hit-and-run driver or at-fault driver with no insurance. Underinsured motorist coverage is not a requirement but will prove helpful should the at-fault driver's insurance prove inadequate.

Stop by our office or give us a call for more information on motorcycle coverage. Our agents can help you make the right decisions for your needs. We hope you'll enjoy motorcycling for years to come!
